470 Europeans, Monaco, 2017 - 4th
So close yet so far away! Having sailing the entire week in and out of the medals we lost our coloured bib in the final fleet race dropping to 4th overall and a frustrating day of waiting around with no wind meant there was no medal race to pull back. A week of extremes with some of the wildest, waviest racing we have seen in our time in the 470 followed by a drift-off the next day!
Sailing World Cup Weymouth, UK, 2016 - 3rd
Back on the podium with a British 1, 2, 3!! This was a brilliant event for us with tough competition so close to the Olympics and came down to a nail-biting medal race which saw us incredibly close to silver on the one hand or to slipping from the medals altogether so we were very happy with a bronze finish!
470 Worlds Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2016 - 17th
One of the strangest places to sail! Not only was it incredibly shallow (our centreboard was hitting the floor off one start line!) but at the time we were there they were having a serious issue with plants that has washed down the river and into the bay. Often the clumps of plants would be so dense that it was impossible to sail through and they became an obstruction on the course which we needed to take into account in our tactics. It felt like the majority of the racing was just a calculated decision on how often was beneficial to lift the foils and clear the weed (probably about every 30 seconds!!) It was difficult to focus on how we would normally race with such distractions going on but despite not being an amazing result we had come a long way with our light winds sailing compared to the 2015 Worlds only a few months before so lots of positives to take from this event.
Copa Brasil de Vela, Rio de Janeiro, 2015 - 10th
An incredible opportunity to compete against the Olympic teams on the Olympic waters in the build up to the 2016 Games and to qualify for the medal race! We were really pleased with our performance at this event in a variety of conditions and amazing to be sailing surrounded by such an iconic and awesome landscape!
Sailing World Cup Final Abu Dhabi, UAE, 2015 - 5th
Definitely up there as one of the best events ever!! A very small but strong fleet made for interesting racing but more importantly left plenty of time for activities! Abu Dhabi were fanstatic hosts making the trip affordable and thoroughly enjoyable. We absolutely loved our time there riding camels, dune bashing, experiencing traditional food, dress and dancing and even catching the red bull motorcross world final while we were there! Not sure whether this one was an event or a holiday,,, certainly very different from our usual event experiences!
470 Worlds Haifa, Israel, 2015 - 34th
This was a devastating result for us in a year when it felt like everything was starting to come together. We discovered a major weakness in the conditions we had that week and it demonstrated how things can fall apart when the pressure is on. We can only look at the learning that came out of this event and how we can build on that to ensure we don't repeat our mistakes!
ISAF Worlds Santander, Spain, 2014 - 28th
With only 4 races in qualifying series and a terrible opening day for us we were devastated when we ended up in silver fleet at this event. Despite this setback we did all we could and won silver fleet to finish 28th overall. Although this event always felt like a disappointment, in hindsight we can be proud of our comeback after the first day!
